Geography

The Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) region is comprised of thirteen counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, McMullen and Wilson.

The 13-county region consists of approximately 12,494.70 square miles and according to the 2010 U.S. Census, the regional area has a population density of 179.99 compared to a statewide density of 96.3.

The largest county land areas are in Medina at 1,325.40 square miles, followed by Bexar at 1,239.80 square miles and Atascosa at 1,219.50 square miles of land.

The largest area of surface water is in McMullen County at 17.40%, followed by 16.3% of surface water area in Bexar County. The land topography for the 13-county region is a variation described as irregular plains and plains with high and open hills.
